Building a Korean Skincare Routine for Beginners

Why Korean Skincare?

Korean skincare has taken the beauty world by storm, and for good reason. The Korean approach focuses on prevention, hydration, and gentle care rather than harsh treatments. It's about nurturing your skin daily for long-term results.

The Essential Steps

While you may have heard of the famous 10-step routine, you don't need to do all ten steps to see results. Here's a simplified version perfect for beginners:

Step 1: Oil Cleanser (PM Only)

Oil cleansers effectively remove makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum without stripping your skin. Massage gently onto dry skin, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser

Follow up with a gentle foaming or gel cleanser to remove any remaining impurities. This double-cleansing method ensures thoroughly clean skin.

Step 3: Toner

Korean toners are different from Western astringents. They're hydrating and help prepare your skin to absorb the next products. Pat gently into skin with your hands.

Step 4: Essence

The heart of Korean skincare! Essences are lightweight, hydrating liquids that help with cell turnover and hydration. Think of it as a booster for your routine.

Step 5: Serum or Ampoule

Target specific concerns like dullness, uneven texture, or dehydration with concentrated serums. Choose based on your skin's needs.

Step 6: Moisturiser

Lock in all that hydration with a moisturiser suited to your skin type. Gel formulas work well for oily skin, while creams are better for dry skin.

Step 7: Sunscreen (AM Only)

The most important step! Korean beauty emphasises sun protection to prevent premature ageing and maintain results from your skincare routine.

Tips for Success

    • Start slowly: Don't introduce all products at once. Add one new product every 1-2 weeks.
    • Listen to your skin: Not every step is necessary for everyone. Customise based on your needs.
    • Consistency is key: Results come from regular care, not occasional treatments.
    • Hydration focus: Korean skincare layers lightweight hydrating products rather than one heavy cream.

When to Seek Professional Advice

While a good home routine is essential, some skin concerns benefit from professional assessment. A skin consultation can help you understand your skin type, identify concerns, and create a personalised routine that works for you.
